While everyone has their own skin type, the barrier function of the skin and its importance remains the same for everyone. Our skin is here to protect us and in return, we need to provide it with appropriate care by using a suitable moisturizer on our skin when possible. However, a suitable moisturiser isn’t necessarily relative to the price tag associated, it’s about choosing the appropriate one for you and your skin. We talked to Dr. Fabrizio Spada about skin and why we need to choose a suitable moisturiser so we can help maintain the skin barrier function.

How important is it to take care of the skin?

The skin is the largest organ that we have and is responsible for the interface between our body and the environment. It is involved in temperature regulation, and our immune response to environmental factors, so taking proper care of its structure is very important, and that’s why you need to cleanse your skin to remove debris or other contaminants from the environment, but you also want to make sure the structure is intact to maintain the hydration that is intrinsic in our skin.

How does a moisturiser work to take care of the skin?

At Ego some of our moisturisers are formulated with what we call a triple moisturising system. Because you want a humectant, which is a molecule which is supposed to trap the moisture inside the skin, but you also want an emollient and an occludent. What they do is create a layer on the skin to minimise the moisture loss from the skin, even throughout the day.

3 distinct types of moisturising ingredients

The levels of the ingredients in the triple moisturiser system can be adjusted depending on the dryness of the skin. For example, you would be best suited to try QV Cream for regular, everyday skin, but you would want to move to an QV intensive cream for drier skin, or if you have “driest” and cracked skin you may want to move to the QV Intensive Body Moisturiser which has the highest level of the moisturiser system ingredients.

Why would oily skin still need a moisturiser?

An oily skin means that skin is producing more sebum, which is one of the many substances that comprise the moisturiser system of the skin. That doesn’t mean that it’s the only requirement for healthy skin barrier functions. So even oily skin still needs a humectant, still needs an occludent, the other components of the triple moisturiser system to make sure that the skin is healthy.

How often should we apply a moisturiser?

It is very important to remember to have a correct and consistent skincare routine. In terms of moisturisation, it is important to moisturise at least twice a day. It’s particularly important after cleansing because that’s when the skin will feel more exposed to the environment and potentially becoming dry. But at least twice a day is the recommendation to avoid dryness in the skin.

Why use a body wash and body cream?

The importance of using a body cleanser and a body moisturiser is really because, although the skin has different thicknesses and morphologies throughout the body, the structure is still the same, it’s still important to maintain skin hydration and minimise moisture loss throughout the day because of our daily activities. So it’s really important to have a dedicated product for the body in terms of cleansing and removing debris or contaminants from the environment, and still preserving the moisturisation by adding an appropriate and suitable body moisturiser.

For example if you’re concerned with sensitive skin, QV Gentle Wash is perfectly formulated for that kind of skin. But if you’re concerned with particularly sensitive or cracked skin, you might want to use QV Bath Oil which still provides adequate cleansing and removal of possible contaminants, but is very high in emollients to still preserve the moisturisation in the skin, even at that level of dryness.
