Every year the beauty industry promotes new miracle skin care ingredients. From dull skin to wrinkles and uneven skin tones, there is a miracle ingredient to help. Beauty brands would have you believe that one key ingredient can do anything. But in reality one ingredient can’t do all of that. Here at Ego, we don’t believe in one ingredient that can fix all problem. It takes a well-formulated blend of ingredients and a consistent skincare routine to bring you beautiful skin.
Miracle Skin Care Ingredients Breakdown
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most commonly touted “miracle skin care ingredients” and how they can help you when formulated in quality, dermatologically tested products.
Vitamin B3
Vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide, is a versatile ingredient. It can help improve skin tone, reduce the appearances of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation and help reduce the chance of skin sensitivity1. This vitamin is commonly found in anti-ageing and brightening products as well as night creams because of its ability to target several cosmetic skin concerns.
Vitamin E
This Vitamin is an anti-oxidant, commonly found in skincare products. It can be used to help reduce the appearance of pigmentation, as well as being a moisturising ingredient2. It is often promoted as a way to reduce the appearance of scarring, however, these claims hold little weight, as they have not been verified in clinical trials.
Avemide 15 (Oat Kernel Extract)
Ego’s Avemide 15, is a gentle oat kernel extract, which helps reduce the chance of irritation of sensitive skin. You can find Avemide 15 in some of our products to help calm the skin and reduce discomfort3.
Avemide 15 itself is a purified and standardised extract of colloidal oatmeal that contains a complex mixture of flavonoids4. Using a standardised avena sativa kernel extract means that we know every time we formulate with this ingredient that you get the same amount in every product. If we choose to use the whole oatmeal we may end up with different amounts of the specific extract in every batch of products made. This is because different batches can be impacted by different environmental conditions, changes to fertilisers used on the crop, and even storage and transport time of the ingredient5.
Spring, with its associated allergies and other sensitivities, is one of the times of year when your skin might be prone to discomfort more often. High pollen counts, increasing temperature and other common irritants in the air can often contribute to changes in the skin. But, luckily, a consistent routine incorporating skin care products containing Avemide 15 can help reduce the chance of skin irritation3.
Safflower Seed Oil
Safflower Seed Oil is a light oil, rich in unsaturated fatty acids and effective as a moisturiser6. It has high levels of linoleic acid, commonly used in beauty products to fight the signs of dry skin7.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C and its derivatives come in many forms and is said to soothe skin8, help reduce visible signs of ageing due to sun exposure, and brighten the complexion9. It’s particularly important to choose quality formulations when using vitamin C containing products4 as some forms of vitamin C can be difficult to work with and must be stored away from air and light as they are prone to destabilising8.
Witch Hazel
A staple in natural beauty routines, witch hazel is an astringent, which tones the skin and provides a cooling effect10.
Glycerin
Glycerin occurs naturally in the skin, it is well tolerated by most people and rarely causes irritation or allergy11. Its humectant (hydrating) effect is especially strong in high-humidity environments12.
Studies have shown that glycerin-containing moisturisers can both reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and help replenish skin hydration13,14,15.
Can they be considered miracle skin care ingredients?
Each of the above skin care ingredients has its own, thus there is no one miracle ingredient. In order for a product to have synergy it needs to be combined with other key ingredients that work alongside each other to accomplish your skincare goals. A quality product will include a well balanced mix of ingredients to help address the skin concerns and will be delivered in a way that allows easy application to the skin.
